Seriously?

September 25, 2008 at 2:33 pm (Political Musings, Random thoughts)

So McCain want(s/ed) to postpone the debate due to the economy.  While I feel on face value what is being said is all noble and stuff, I have to ponder the true behinde the scenes issues with this.  A president is going to have to be able to “multi-task” many different aspects of a very demanding career.  That being said, there is never going to be one crisis at a time to maintain.  In general superstitious speaking terms, things happen in 3’s.  If you aren’t able to handle a major economic crisis and a 2 hour debate at the same time – I don’t want you in office.  I like that Obama had the good sense to say, yes, we should work on this major economic crisis together, however we need to keep the debate in process….Although I really wish he would have said – “Oh, I totally understand.  Since we are holding of the presidential debate, why don’t we move up the VP debate – Sarah’s not doing anything at that point right?!?”.  Ahh…to be the bigger person when pissed.  :D

Crazy Ramblings on a Wednesday…

September 24, 2008 at 7:13 pm (Friends, Pregancy Issues, Random thoughts, work)

I’m just sitting hear listenting to a little Joni Mitchell – Circle Game to be exact…

I don’t know why today is the day that I am missing my brother…nothing is going on.  The atmosphere at work is a little cloudy…I’m feeling moody…and Pete is in Chicago (admitidly driving back today, but still not here).  It’s just one of those great down days.

Wish it was anything but.  I can only  handle sad and down once in a while….today is not one of those days.  Trying to focus on the positive…but having a hard time with that today.  I should have ovulated either yesterday or today, but what does that help – Pete aint here to hit the little bugger…so probably not going to get pg this month…Just getting tired of all this shit!  It’s so silly.  Wondering when my body will work (I know, when it’s supposed to)…getting sick of people who have no clue what this feels like trying to help…And tired of not being knocked up! Grr!  I mean seriously, put Tab B into Slot A, move around a bit, and Wham, it should be happening.  Well we’ve followed all the steps and all the directions and had quite a bit of Wham’s and still no baby growing.  I held off on Sex because of the possiblities of pregnancy – Man, should have had a TON of sex – that would have mad me get pregnant!  Sheesh!

Good news is that I’ve been catching up with some old friends.  Some are welcome additions to my life, some I’m still feeling out whether I really want them having access to my life.  Facebook and MySpace are nice in small doses and in small degree’s, but sometimes I don’t like people having access to that information…Yet, I am content to pour my thoughts out into cyberspace fo the world to read….Conundrum anyone?

Oh well, I supposed I should go back to pretending to work, and ignoring most of those that I work with because they are on my nerves right now…but not really wanting to.  Online Backgammon anyone?  Actually I am extremely bored right now.  So bored to the point that my brain feels like it went to sleep about an hour ago.  Any one want to meet me tonight for shots?  I’ll pour the vodka, you bring the trashcan!

What do a .44 Magnum, a .22 Rifle and a .410 Shotgun have in common?

September 22, 2008 at 2:25 pm (Hunting, Random thoughts, Weekend Activities)

Hunter’s safety class for Whitni!  My mom and I took Hunter’s Safety this weekend at the River Raisen Sportsman’s Club in Blissfield.  It was 8 until 5 on Saturday (a TON of videos), along with a tree stand and bow hunting demonstration, and ending with some shooting oportunities, which is where I got the opportunity to shoot a .44 Magnum.  And then 12 until 6 on Sunday.  With the test (which by the way I got 100% on), and then training on when to shoot and when to not shoot, gun safety, and then indoor target shooting with .22 rifles and outdoor Trap shooting with shotguns (I used the .410).   I did really well on the gun safety, and the .22, however not so good with the .410.  My mother hit one of the trap out of 5, I only hit 0.  Yes folks that’s  Zero!  However, my target shooing with the .22  I had 4 out 5 shots within only a cm of the bullseye (at 50 feet).  So that was pretty cool.

Other than that our weekend was pretty quiet.  Peter is on his way to Chicago for a couple of days for work, and will get back on Wednesday.  Then I will be leaving around 4 on Friday to drive down to Evansville for our friend Emily’s Wedding Shower.  Should be a good time.  Hopeing to see some of our fantastic friends!!!!  Things seem to be going better all around!  Whoo!

DJ Spooky Remix “Birth of a Nation”

August 15, 2008 at 4:00 pm (DJ Spooky, Educational Opportunities, Random thoughts)

Last night Pete and I went to the DIA to see Paul D Miller a.k.a. Dj Spooky’s remix of Birth of a Nation. To be honest, I went to keep Pete company, and Pete went mostly because it was Dj Spooky. We didn’t know what we were in for, and for that I am thankful. It was an interestingly moving moment for us. Dj Spooky did a remix on the film Birth of Nation that was made by DW Griffith in 1917. It was utilized until sometime in the 60’s as a recruitment film for the KKK. He utilized music he had composed and sampled himself over 3 large screens to remix the movie, keeping the ideas of the movie the same, but also using title cards he wrote himself to battle with the original ideas of the movie. He chose a subtle shout to create a battleground of thoughts, words and ideas that have stretched across the years. Prejudice and hate, intermingled with a revisionist history propaganda that was used to create hate for years, and what was Dj Spooky doing? One member of the audience during the Q&A afterwards stated: that she was dismayed at what she saw. She wanted to know what he was thinking bring this film to Detroit, to a community that is working to rebuild itself with pride and that is in the middle of a scandal that it hurting its efforts. To bring this movie to an area that had fought for it never to be shown. I liked how he handled it. He could have been extremely standoffish – this is his art and how dare you not understand it. He could have been extremely narcissistic about it and looked at her and said well too bad, you aren’t intelligent enough to understand my vision. However he stated very calmly and succinctly that he wanted to have more dialog with her. Wanted to understand what bothered her so much about this. Because what he was trying to do was to show people an irreverence for history, especially revisionist history to help loosen the power it has over people.

This was an educational evening of epic proportions to me. The idea that we should always know our history so that we don’t repeat it. The idea that we are repeating history all of the time. This propaganda film from 1917…flash forward to Hitler’s Propaganda films during World War II…then flash forward to our current propaganda – Weapons of Mass Destruction, Illegal Immigrants, Alternative Lifestyles. They all repeat each other. What have we learned…what have we taught the next generation…

I commend Paul Millers vision. It is with an open heart and an open mind that we walked into that theater, and I was enriched by it. If it comes to your area on DVD, I heartily urge you to rent it. If it comes to your area live, I highly suggest you go…it is an experience you do not want to miss.

Green Makes the World Go Round

August 8, 2008 at 3:43 pm (CSA, Environment, Food, Green Living, LaVida Local, Random thoughts, Weekend Activities)

So my quest and desire to go green, more organic keeps on keeping on.

Pete and I have missed out (again mind you) on signing up for a local CSA :( *Boo, Hiss* However, while looking thorough localharvest.org last week, I stumbled on a local buying club (year round even) called La Vida Local. The owner Julie is a very upbeat and friendly woman. The buying club runs this way: she works with local farmers and producing companies to procure items that are organic and green. Every week she sends you a shopping list (and it is quite extensive). This past week our list had oh so many items, ranging from Dairy to produce to meat to beauty items as well as cleaning items. You pick out what you want (we got a beautiful Steak (HUGE), ground beef, Cottage Cheese, Raw Milk Gouda, Spaghetti Sauce and Ricotta Gnocchi as well as a stainless coffee/ice tea mug for me. Then you pay her though pay pal for your times and $5 for delivery and she delivers these items to your home. It’s fabulous. I cannot wait to try what we bought…I feel steak coming on.

Target has also started carrying really inexpensive shopping bags that fit into your purse. I picked up two. One was $.99 and fits really easily into my purse, and the other was $1.50 and is huge, but folds up to about the size of small book, but really thin. I keep that one in my car. Great idea for being on the run and not bringing home too many plastic bags.

I also purchased fabric last night to try to make my own reusable menstrual pads. Keep your fingers crossed about my sewing skills!

Well that’s about it. Pete and I are heading to Ann Arbor on Saturday to pick up my dress for my sister’s wedding, and then we are relaxing the whole weekend long! Whoo! Have a great weekend everyone!

Heavy Thoughts on a Friday…

June 6, 2008 at 8:53 pm (Random thoughts)

I like to read news clips, whether they come from Time, BBC or TMZ.com. I love trying to keep abreast of everything I can in every area…that’s why my Google Site has People, Snopes, Wired, BBC, Time, WebMD, etc. Today while I was looking at these headlines I noticed one from Time regarding Lowering the Drinking Age.

I can appreciate both sides of this story.  I have long thought that since Prohibition the US has put too much emphasis on Alcohol…which since has made it a much more taboo subject then necessary.    I don’t know if raising or lowering the drinking age is really the answer. No matter what you do, teenagers are going to push the limits that are provided to them.  Currently if you were to lower the age to 18…then we would have the same problems, just with 16 and 17 year olds (which we already have).  I truly believe that the only way to curb the problem is to stop treating alcohol as a taboo issue and start educating people.  If you make it no big deal…it becomes no big deal.

I remember when I turned 21…and I could FINALLY buy alcohol and drink legally.  It started to lose it luster.  I had drank a bit before my 21st birthday and I remember the rebel feelings that it brought out in me.  I was breaking the law, I was break rules…Watch out James Dean…hear I come.  However I remember my excitement sitting in a bar and handing over my Driver’s License for my first legal drink.  And immediately after I realized drinking had lost it’s luster.  Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoy having a nice drink, glass of wine, good beer or all three…but you have to admit…there is a little less luster about it now.

I really do believe that eduction is the key.  If people understand why…then they are better able to make intelligent decisions.  Not to say that everyone will make those decisions…but at least it’s a more viable option, then just making an age change.  I feel like the age changes is more of a bandade to the background problem then an actual cure.
