There’s a Little Black Spot on the Sun Today…

July 28, 2008 at 3:25 pm (Concerts, Family, Weekend Activities, work)

Well it’s been a little bit since I’ve updated :) Oops! We’ve had an extremely busy (but lovely) couple of weeks here in Michigan. On the 19th we hosted my sister Chelsea’s wedding shower, which might I add was a BLAST! I rock…I know it!

Chelsea’s Wedding Shower

Last week at work was pretty busy. We had a couple of people out of the office and it made for interesting moments. But the weekend rocked. Natalie and Rob drove out from Wisconsin to hang with us and the four of us went to The Police Concert (with special guest Elvis Costello) at DTE (which is an outdoor amphitheaters). It was a GREAT concert…and I must say it may actually tie with seeing the Violent Femmes…Just saying! Elvis rocked our socks off. He was charismatic, and his songs were fabu! Just love that man! Then The Police came on stage. And OH MY GOD! They were fantastic. They did all the favorites, and some newer ones. There were 2 encores, and we didn’t leave DTE until 11:30. It was a fantastically long and beautiful concert. I danced and sang my ass off, and was generally just ecstatic! If you get a chance to see them in concert…GO! They Rocked. Nat took some pics, so when I get them from here, I’ll post them here. We had pretty good lawn seats…so we’ll see.

Pete’s mom is flying in on Wednesday and then the 3 of us are going to see Neil Diamond at The Palace of Auburn Hills…I’ll let you know how that one goes! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Sad News…

July 16, 2008 at 1:08 pm (Uncategorized)

My mom called yesterday and My Uncle Leonard (actually great uncle) passed away at 81 years old.  He was my grandpa Langmeyer’s last living sibling.  He was a very good man with a big heart and will be missed terribly.  The funeral is tomorrow here in Rochester Hills (he lived in West Branch, Michigan).  That’s really it.  Just wanted to let you all know.

Welcome back from the weekend!

July 14, 2008 at 6:33 pm (Uncategorized)

Well this weekend is the second in our unending list of weekends that we have planned this month :) Peter’s folks Susan and Thomas flew in on Friday afternoon and are staying with us until Saturday the 19th. It’s nice to have them here. They got in around noon on Friday, and Pete had the day off to pick them up from the airport and hang with them, which I know they love! On my way home from work on Friday, I stopped off a Trader Joe’s (my favorite place) and picked up Korean Short Ribs, Vegetable Fried Rice and Gyoza (Chicken) for dinner. Pete grilled the ribs, and I cooked the rice, and steamed the Gyoza. We had a wonderful dinner with Pete’s folks out on the patio with a nice bottle of $3 buck Chuck (from a previous trip to Trader Joes)! It was a beautiful night.

On Saturday, we all got up and going. We had dinner at Kabob Grill (which has wonderful Lebanese food). And then traveled onto Dearborn, Michigan to The Henry Ford Museum (which we didn’t go to). Instead, since the weather wasn’t going to cooperate with anything else (rain) we went on the Rouge River Factory Tour. It was very interesting. The starting point is outside of The Henry Ford Museum. You take about a 5-10 minutes shuttle ride (where they show you an introductory video) to the Factory. Once there you enter Stage One. Which is a short video on the rise of Henry Ford; his childhood, the beginning of ford (after 2 failed attempts) and his subsequent success. The Rouge River Factory is where they build the Ford F-150’s (which of course aren’t in production currently). Then you move onto Stage 2. Here they have a multi-sensory production, where you follow the creation of a Ford F-150. It’s really interesting. There are 7 or 9 HUGE screens in an octagonal type room. There is also music (which was composed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra), and “smells” to get you into things. Your seat completely swivels around. All in all, a really neat experience. From there, you take an elevator up to the Observation deck. From here you can see the living room. This plant has some really neat environmental items built in to assist in being a more “clean” “green” company. The living roof is covered in Succulents, which help to clean up the air around the plant. They have MULTIPLE skylights built into each section of the plant to assist in providing natural light when possible. They also have multiple solar panels to assist in the energy conservation as well. They also have what is called porous pavement. I thought this was really neat. They are working on helping to clean up the Rouge River (which of course they added the pollution to in the first place) and one of the steps is to filter out any contaminants in runoff before it hits the Rouge. The porous pavement is constructed in an almost honeycomb pattern, with sand and such to filter the rain/water run off before it hits the Rouge. From here you take an elevator down to the factory floor. When the factory is running you get the opportunity to view the line workers and how this factory operates. As it’s not running right now, we were only able to view videos along the way and see the silent floor. But it was fascinating nonetheless. Then from here, you go back to the ground floor which is called the Legacy floor and you can see a small progression of the vehicles from the Model T on down to the Ford F-150 (I believe that were created at this plant). It was really interesting. We were only able to take pictures on the observation deck and on the Legacy floor…and you can see those below. After that, we headed back to Rochester Hills and had dinner at Rochester Mills, which is the local brewery and restaurant. It’s fantastic, and easily one of our favorite places to eat!

On Sunday, we awoke and cooked breakfast at the house. Then we left and headed back to Dearborn Michigan, this time to Greenfield Village (which is in the same area as The Henry Ford Museum and The Rouge River Factory). Greenfield Village was constructed in (I believe) 1929 by Henry Ford. It is a walk through time. There are settlements from the 1890’s, where they are still growing crops. Buildings, built as they were. There is a tinsmith, a Print Shop, Pottery Shop, Wool Shop, Saw Mill, Glass Blowing Shop there as well. There is a section on Machinery, and even Model T Rides (which were fun). There is a Main Street area that has the Wright Brother’s Cycle Shop and Home, a Millinery, Post Office, General Store. There is a section dedicated to Thomas Edison. Henry Ford, was a great friend and admirer of Thomas Edison. He built exact replicas of his Menlo Park, NJ workshop on site. When Greenfield Village opened in 1929, Edison was on hand for the opening. He was quoted as saying that Henry Ford got 98% of his Menlo Park complex correct. When asked what he did wrong, Edison said, it was never THIS clean. There is also a chair there that Edison sat in when he was there for the opening. Henry Ford had the chair nailed to the floor to the exact spot and it has been there ever since. A couple of years ago, they had to replace the floor, and couldn’t get the chair up. So they built the new floor around it. There is a TON here, and we missed some of it. We also rode the Edison Steam Engine (which goes around the park). That was really fun and really relaxing. We headed back after the Village closed and had dinner in Rochester Hills at Kubla Khan, which for those that live in Evansville is a cross between Nagasaki and Jaya’s. Really good Asian food.

Then I went to bed! What a fun weekend, I wonder what the rest of the week will hold?!?!

Happy Friday (Couldn’t find a proper title)

July 11, 2008 at 1:40 pm (Food, Pregancy Issues, Trader Joes, Weekend Activities)

Happy, Happy Happy Friday!  I love Fridays!  Pete has the day off today, to go to the airport and pick up his folks.  Whoo!  Susan and Thomas will be visiting us through Saturday, July 19th.  It’ll be nice to see them.  I’m not sure what all we have planned, but I know tonight when I get off of work, I will be heading to Trader Joe’s to pick up some Korean Short Ribs and Fried Rice for dinner.  Pete can grill the ribs on the grill. They are fantastic!  Yummm!

In other news…I had my first attack of emotionalness with the progesterone today.  My boss thought I was mad at her, and came in and said something and I started crying.  Seriously.  Most of my side effect symptoms to the progesterone have been just extreme tiredness…but today the emotional end hit in.  Which makes sense since it’s a hormoney and all.  If this works, I will be the most annoying pregnant lady eva!

Uh….other than that…not much to say thus far. …Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!!!

Happy Fourth of July Everyone!!!

July 7, 2008 at 2:38 pm (Fourth of July, Friends, Weekend Activities)

So my Fourth of July weekend Rocked? How about yours? We drove down to Amanda’s on Thursday after work and arrived around 11:30 pm. Hung out and talked until 2 and then crashed out! We got up and going early Friday morning and Pete and I headed to Rochester, Indiana. About 1 hour 15 minutes from Amanda’s place to visit with Jess, Andy and Rowan and Jess’ folks. It was a beautiful morning and afternoon. I got to hold my new nephew forever! And Jess’ folks took us all out on a fantastic ride around the lake and we had a wonderful lunch with them! I loved seeing Jess and Andy – although seeing Rowan was the highlight. After that, we left around 2:30 and headed back to Wolcott and met back up with AP. Pete, AP and I headed to West Lafayette, Indiana to Ed and Laura’s house for food and fireworks. Chris, Carrie, Steve, and Lindsay met us there. And we had a good ole time! AP, Pete and I headed back to Wolcott. On Saturday, Chris, Carrie, Steve, Lindsay, Ed and Laura and kids, met us back at AP’s. Chris and Emily drove on over from Illinois, and AP’s friends from Church, Tammy and Dean and Miranda and Paul and kids came over for a fantatically fun cookout! Lots of Food, Lots of Beer and lots of fireworks! Emily’s Chris played tag with the kids for around an hour – and that was a TON of entertainment (and then they pulled him into the corn)! In the morning on Sunday, Chris, Carrie, STeve and Lindsay headed back to Evansville (then on to Savannah for Chris and Carrie). Pete and I headed back to Michigan! We had a wonderful weekend! Thanks to everyone who helped to make that possible! I cannot wait to see everyone again!

SHOCK! *Gasp*

July 3, 2008 at 6:47 pm (UE)

I was faithfully reading my It’s Evansville this afternoon and ran across an entry regarding today’s post in the Evansville Courier Press regarding Dr. Stephen Jennings. UE’s president. He was pulled over last night for DUI. Now this is shocking for all Evansville Alum’s and affiliates, because UE is Methodist Associated University and a Dry Campus. There is no drinking allowed on campus, and if you are caught there are different levels and things you must go through in order to “remedy” the situation. So this is where the absolute shock and horror comes from, because having attended and graduated from UE, the president is a figure head of the University.

Now after saying that and after registering my shock and horror. I feel mostly sorry for Dr. Jennings. Yes, I realize that he is in a position of power and authority. And that we as a society hold people in those positions to a higher standard. But he is first and formost a man. And what an embarrassment for him and his family. Reading the plethora of comments on the Courier site, I was dismayed. Most of the vultures on this site are attacking him, when he’s down, and it seems to me that’s what we tend to do. Keep our eyes out for those who we perceive as being more holy then ourselves to fall, then we jump on them in all of our righteous dignity. However, this whole situation reminds me of the line “Be he who has not sinned be the first to cast stones”. I tell you, how many times in my stupidity have I put myself (and others who shared the road with me) in a similar situation. I thankfully never hurt anyone or was caught, however I did stupid things (not just when I was a “teenager”, but as I’ve aged as well). Thankfully I have learned from my mistakes, and hopefully he will as well. But I think before we tar and feather the gentleman, we might first want to take a step back and see what our skeleton’s in the closet are and see if we are able to cast a stone at him, or if we should first throw them at ourselves. Because in all reality we are ALL role models to the children/people out in this world, whether we have signed up for the job or not…Not just him.
